The analogy with S. Africa breaks down because of this, in S. Africa there was a big change in the ruling elite, in Indonesia post 1998 actually very little change, the Army still on top.

Anyway on my site there are currently several discussions on these topics going on -

Forgiveness

Suharto & the People

Genocide

Anti Communist MassacresPatunghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05281710045534187016noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33574382.post-5801612232591023452008-01-25T16:40:00.000+11:002008-01-25T16:40:00.000+11:00I agree. The obstacles Peter McCawley points to as in being in the way of Indonesia having some sort of Truth and Reconciliation Commission, while important, are less convincing when remembering that East Timor successfully completed one just over two years ago. http://www.etan.org/news/2006/cavr.htm It resulted in a thoroughly commendable report that loud responsibility out clearly, including dealing with the atrocities also perpetrated by the East Timorese resistance. There is also the much less successful Indonesia-Timor Leste Commission of Truth and Friendship going on at the moment. http://www.ctf-ri-tl.org/

One of McCawley's objections, lack of resources, was also the case in East Timor. Another objection, no tradition of open public inquiries, was also the case in East Timor (and i assume in South Africa too). The argument that Indonesia has more current problems to deal with was probably even more applicable in East Timore.

However, his point about the lack of foreign interest in Indonesia is true. The process of creating the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation in East Timor was supported by many foriegn governments and organisations eager to help the world's newest nation, while the 1965 atrocities in Indonesia are seen as very old hat. But I'm sure if Indonesia declared that it was setting up such a commission, foriegn help for it would start to come. The impetus has to intially come from Indonesians, and hopefully East Timor's willingness to undergo such a process itself would serve as a moral example. Hopefully.

Also I'd like to know more about that forum you mention, but it's all in Indonesian!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
